King Philanthropies is guided by the personal values of Bob and Dottie King. Following a successful investment career, the Kings shifted their focus to philanthropy in 1995. King Philanthropies’ work flows directly from the inspiration of its founders and centers on a singular goal: to combat extreme poverty in Sub-Saharan Africa and Asia.

Position Overview

The Portfolio Manager plays a critical role in executing the King Essentials grantmaking program while also supporting other key initiatives at the Foundation. Reporting to the Director of King Essentials, the Portfolio Manager helps the team identify, support, and manage a cohort of high-performing organizations addressing the drivers of extreme poverty and deepens our knowledge on priority investment areas. The Portfolio Manager also plays a valuable role across the organization as a “team of teams” player by providing targeted research and analysis spanning different functions, such as the CEO’s office, Strategy, Communications, and Climate + Poverty.

Core Responsibilities

  • Source, evaluate, and present funding opportunities by talking to peer funders, interviewing experts, and conducting financial and organizational analyses around impact evidence, business model, scaling, and capacity to deliver results.
  • Partner with King Essentials’ grantees to deepen impact through regular conversations and report reviews, introductions to relevant experts and potential partners, and co-creating opportunities.
  • Independently conduct research and gather evidence to fill knowledge gaps, prove or disprove hypotheses, describe industry trends, and/or map competitive landscape and players
  • Codify best practices and lessons learned from our work, including development of public-facing materials as needed.
  • Regularly evaluate data on our grantee portfolio, including review of reports and tracking progress against key metrics.
  • Travel internationally for site visits to meet with existing and prospective grantees as needed.

Qualifications

  • A Bachelor’s degree with at least five years of professional work experience; a master’s degree is strongly preferred
  • The ability to efficiently research and synthesize large volumes of information from diverse sources to compile data, develop quantitative models and succinctly present concepts and ideas to Management and the Board
  • Proven writing and editing skills and strong command of English, with an ability to convey complex ideas in a clear, direct and lively manner. Ability to design effective PowerPoint presentations and create other data-rich materials that can tell a compelling story.
  • Prior knowledge of extreme poverty, international development, philanthropy, and/or climate change is desirable, as well as a demonstrated passion for and commitment to King Philanthropies’ mission
  • Ability to self-manage workstreams and tasks with high standards for quality output
  • Excellent listening skills with strong interpersonal skills across cultures
  • A curious and creative intellect and a style that includes flexibility, humility, and a sense of humor
  • Candidates must be authorized to work in the United States

Location

The Portfolio Manager must work from the Foundation’s office in Menlo Park, California starting Fall 2021, and be able to travel domestically and internationally as required.
