Liberia is among the world’s poorest countries: It has a population of roughly 5 million people, and about two-fifths of them live in extreme poverty. From 1989 to 2003, the country went through a period of civil war that brought destruction to much of its physical and social infrastructure. Then, after making progress in rebuilding its economy, Liberia experienced the twin shocks of the 2014 Ebola epidemic and a steep decline in commodity prices. As a consequence, much of its population struggles to meet basic needs in areas such as food security and health care access.

Despite these challenges, Liberia offers a promising environment for high-performing nonprofit organizations that deliver effective, scalable interventions. After identifying several of these organizations, King Essentials selected Liberia to be a focus country. Our work in the country targets investment areas such as food and agriculture, land rights, and primary health care.
